A person with diabetes has high blood sugar because their pancreas either does not make enough insulin or their cells do not react to it. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. Normally, food is converted into glucose after eating, the body’s main source of energy. Insulin is produced and released in the pancreas to transport glucose to the cells. Normally, the pancreas automatically creates insulin in response to the blood glucose level. However, in people with diabetes, the pancreas produces little to no insulin or insulin resistance develops in the body’s cells.
